  1. Long time no update

It was brought to my attention yesterday that I haven’t been blogging that much recently, being busy with other things means that I haven’t had time to reflect on what I have been up to.

Reflecting upon the blog itself, in its current form I started it on October 23rd, 2003 – almost 5 years ago. I actually had an older blog with custom PHP that I wrote before that, and even longer before that I had an HTML blog that I edited in a text editor. Adding up to about 10 years of blogging. I have thought about taking these older posts and including them in this blog but they seem so old now that they really are not relevant to anyone – and contain nothing interesting about my personal life so I see no need to drag up old technology for the sake of it.

Looking at the blog for a moment it really does need some work, the images are all over the place, the text formatting is quite awful – particularly when I post code and some of the images for older posts just don’t exist any more. In the future I will learn to get the images on to the localsite instead of linking. I guess either I have to get down and sort it out (unlikely with everyone else going on)

So what have I been up to. Well I have spent quite a lot time working with Django in my personal time. I love that framework though the recent upgrade from a point release to 1.0 caused some major headaches.

At work we have released Viz|Link, which I have been working on for a long time, and I am currently working on GUI work and doing some C++ coding.

Home is looking like a home more and more. Almost all the boxes are gone and there is just some building work to be done. And all the painting – only the first hall way has been tackled at the moment. Photos soon…

Other than that I am going to England this weekend as long as I can find a hotel and K&I are doing Cuban Salsa every week which is fun. Svenska lessons start next month – can’t wait!

I wish I could provide an update on all the food & drinking places that I have been going to in Stockholm but memory is drawing a blank at the moment. This will have to do for now.

  2. Upgraded Wordpress

Well I decided to update the blogging software that I use – Wordpress, to the latest version. I guess that I will be trying to sort out problems for a while ;-)

It does seem more responsive – but it has messed up a few things.

  3. John Battelle’s Searchblog: Predictions 2008

This is quite interesting, though I had hoped that he would say Myspace would disappear. Heres hoping.

John Battelle’s Searchblog: Predictions 2008: “This year I am going to organize my predictions by companies (just the big ones) and trends. I’m focusing on advertising and search markets and the largest companies in that space, as that seems to be what’s on our collective minds these days, and it’s what I seem to have focused on in the past, as I read through my past prediction posts.

So what are the trends in 2008?”

  4. Happy New Year

Now 2008 is upon us I have noticed that I really haven’t been giving this site the attention it deserves, particularly in the amount of updates, so hopefully I will get much more on top of things here than I did in 2007 but it does feel that I have been quite busy at work and in my personal life so here is a list of what I have been up to:

    Moved from Norway to Sweden
Transferred over from vizrt to Ardendo’s offices in Sweden.
Visited England, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden (I think I can get away with both of those because I wasn’t living in them at the time), Denmark, Australia, Singapore, China, Netherlands, America and Japan – some of them more than once.
Moved from Vasastan to Södermalm in Stockholm.
    Met Kristin.
Was the best man at my Cousin’s wedding.
Met lots of people from all over the world.
Took lots of photos and got more into my Photography.

So what’s in store for 2008?

    Build or create something.
Keep up the blogging a bit more.
    Make someone happy.
    Work harder.

So they are reasonably realistic, but I can imagine that every guide out there to getting things done would say be more specific but I understand what they mean to me and I can’t imagine them being anymore uninteresting to anyone else if I went into depths..

Whilst I am on lists I might as well make one more:

Favourite music of 2007: Booka Shade, Plaid and Justice
Favourite film of 2007: Bourne Supremacy
Favourite food of 2007: Sushi in Japan.
Favourite place of 2007: Tokyo, Japan.
Favourite TV show of 2007: Dexter

    I will stop now…

  5. I give up – an essay on smoking

Stephen Fry posted this on his blog the other day, and well its a perfectly good tale of smoking. Really liking his blog.

    I Give Up
    A short blessay on addiction.

Have I an ‘addictive personality?’ Am I an addiction addict? Is there some gene in me that predisposes me to dependency? Did I inherit a demonstrable physical tendency or was it a character flaw? Am I simply weak? Weak-willed, self-indulgent, lacking in character, moral fibre, decency, strength of mind, honesty and courage?

Is that even a fair array of choices? Maybe there’s an admixture of weakness, genetic propensity and hedonistic degradation in me. Perhaps I should calm down and let myself off the hook in some areas while justly castigating myself in others.

Let’s lay out the history first. Incidentally, I know there is nothing quite so yawn-worthy as a ‘my drugs hell’ confessional, so I’ll try and get it out of the way as swiftly as I can.
