if u are using EPEL repo, you can use IUSCommunity repo too (rackspace comunity repo http://iuscommunity.org/)

in this repo you can find python2.6 that is installed side to side to the python2.4 from RHEL.

i normally install python2.6 and python2.6-devel from this repo, and after this install distribute instead of setuptools and after this all my needed python deps with easy_install2.6.</description>
