  2. Product redesign, first steps in a process

So we have started on a major product redesign at work and things are going well.

The product in question is the flagship product from our Swedish office, and the launch point and central resource for the many others here.

Starting a redesign is no simple process, after all the decision to do so usually comes from several sources not just the need to do it, but justifiable business reasoning.

The first thing we did was to look at the reasoning behind a redesign and what the goals for doing it are. We identified a list of major and minor reasons including:

    • Ease of use
    • New generation of APIs
    • Flexibility
    • Extendibility

I think took a very long look at what we had in the existing interface, identifying what was right and wrong with the current iteration.

Then I investigated what we actually needed to show and how the information broke down into component parts. It quickly was shown that we had three major areas.

    • Find
    • Display list of items
    • Display of a single item

And then I broke down the interactions that users may do on these items and lists, as well as the process used in getting there.

Of course this was all done on the whiteboard:

    And some workflows:

There are many more items that we went through as well. But it seemed that the main issue was to solve this through a simpler navigation system – more of which to come in my next post.

  3. Karlstad and Birthdays

So this weekend we went up to Karlstad, and it feels like quite a while ago that we did. Kristin had her birthday this Monday, so it was a small family gathering for her eating good food, dealing with too many chickens and picking Chanterelle mushrooms.

Yesterday was Kristin’s birthday so we went out for a meal at Brassier Godot. It was good food, but perhaps not as cosy as we could have wished.

  4. Last FM

I recently thought that I would check out my listing on Last FM to see stats etc.. and to see what features they have added.

Looks like I had forgotten to run last.fm on my Mac so it wasn’t updated since February. So that’s probably about 1000 hours of music unlisted, and lots of music missing. Gutted. Oh well, perhaps I will remember now.

  5. New paint, new kitchen – almost

Last weekend we got our act together and started on the kitchen, its probably the room in the house that needs the least work on it but its nice to make our own mark and give it some character.

As with the rest of the house, the ceilings are white, and some of the smaller walls we kept white, which goes nicely with the kitchen units and the old 1920s original kitchen cupboards and doors that are still there.

But on the main wall, and the two smaller side parts we painted pistachio green, and also behind the radiator. It looks good, and certainly adds much needed colour to the space.

I cleaned all the cupboards, tiles and wordwork, Kristin cleaned the windows, floors. So it looks as good as new.

Hottip: I gave all the stainless steel appliances a clean with warm water and very little washing up liquid, and then coated with WD-40 on paper towels. A little WD-40 goes a long way, after a minute wipe of with a cloth bringing up to a shine. WD-40 helps to polish and will also repel grease, fingerprints and other marks for quite some time.

Now all to be done is to put on the new shelves that will hold the Hi-Fi, repair the wiring to the dish washer and HiFi, and oil & seal the kitchen work surface.

After we put everything in, I will put up some photos. Yay!
