  1. Firefox 1.5 is out

Yes, Mozilla firefox 1.5 is now out! Ready for download, though the spreadfirefox.com site is down ready for the launch of firefox Flicks. I just beta tested firefox flicks, and it is basically really going to cause a lot of noise on the blogsphere. Personally it ran really badly on my G4 Laptop – but then many of Flash Apps do.

    firefox

Its going to be interesting to see what gets posted up on that site, particularly when you have things like http://www.funnyfox.org being produced. It would be lovely to see that kind of quality oif production and ideas, but I am sure that its going to create some interesting content nonetheless. I wasn’t that happy with the usability either (a flash app it is, but it still could be better), firstly hard to understand, secondly if I wasn’t beta testing the site could I be bothered to find out. Well time will tell.

Wired has an interesting article http://www.wired.com/news/ebiz/0,1272,67612,00.html talking about Mozillas marketing tactics that is worth a quick read.

but should users upgrade to the new firefox, well yes, there are new security features, the rendering engine Gecko has been rewritten and the extensions are now a smoother prospect. I have yet to install it, I will after this post, but one question remains – will it integrate with OSX properly using the OS’s in built authentication schema or will it still store usernames and passwords in its own little world? Well I am going to find out in a second, and then its off to bed – after all its about 02:15am in Norway at the moment. Time indeed for some sleep.

  2. New Firefox

The new firefox browser is almost with us, and I have signed up as a last minute Beta tester. As soon as the browser is out, and it should be followed by a new video marketing compaign, which I can’t wait to see – I am sure there will be main opensourced versions of it to come.

    Upgrade to Firefox 1.5!

As soon as it is up I will post again.

  5. Google Blog and a 2.0 Checklist

Well six apart is talking about Google launching their new Blog Search engine. Why one can’t just use the normal search engine is beyond me, but as noted in the six apart post is that it can search by author and it gets its data from the XML feeds.. http://www.sixapart.com/pronet/weblog/2005/09/google_launches.html The search engine does seem to work, but thats to be expected of Google really. I wish they would stop bringing out new ways of controlling the market place and improve their offerings though. They are going to end up like a huge corporate that everyone hates if they continue to try and take over the way information is catalogued, searched, distributed, authored and shared.

This is the Web 2.0 checklist, http://msippey.tadalist.com/lists/public/155420 , so if you are going to produce the next 2.0 app you need those elements!

I particularly like the “sprinkled with Ajax” part.

  6. Bergen

Well I have moved to Bergen and as stated in an earlier post I was going to write about moving here, firstly the town itself.

Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, a municipality, it used to be the capital (now Oslo), is situated on the west coast of Norway and has a population of about 240,000 people. It is a very old trading city, and some of the old buildings can still be seen, though the most famous Bryggen is from the early 18th Century.

For satelite pictures up close, use google here:

And this is where it is in relation to the rest of Norway, indeed you can also see Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania:

  7. New sites

Well I spent too long last night inbetween episodes of Rome looking at websites, because after 3 weeks being off I felt like I have forgotten the web.

Theres alot of speak about Web 2.0 most of which later, but its just a stupid term (wasn’t web 2.0 e-commerce, or rather e-commerce becoming ecommerce?) but there are alot of really good sites doing things with APIs, merging and syndicating content, tagging, RSS + ATOM, colloboration etc. One neat thing about using WordPress is users are always coming out with new plugins that join Wordpress up to interesting sites.

Some of the more recent ones I have joined are:

http://www.43places.com/person/timc3 (You will see a test entry below) and with that comes,
    43things
    All consuming
    del.icio.us/timc3
    Odeo

With tagging I don’t yet think anyone has got it really right, as there is no set heirarchy of the tags apart from relevance to the amount of people clicking an item, or the amount of times it is used alongside another tag. Perhaps in 2006 we will see people really sorting out tagging.
