1. Debian from DHCP to Static

All you have to do is edit /etc/network/interfaces and change:

iface eth0 inet dhcp

to:

iface eth0 inet static
address 10.10.10.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 10.10.10.0
broadcast 10.10.10.255
gateway 10.10.10.1

Of course it is possible to uninstall dhclient, but I wouldn’t advise it because it can be useful in the future.

2. Adobe and Macromedia

Adobe and Macromedia jointly announced today that Adobe is to acquire all Macromedia stocks for approx $3.4 billion. This will make them in effect a huge creative monopoly with Adobe getting all the nice frontend developer tools that they found so hard to make themselves. Apparently though, this merger will not happen until approved by the stock holders and government regulators for obvious reasons.

For more information I recommend reading the Adobe FAQ:
http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/invrelations/adobeandmacromedia.html

Macromedia’s press release is here:

Personally I think that although a massive player is not always good for an industry, for creatives it will mean new benefits in bring together Flash, Flex, Photoshop, After Effects, Acrobat, and many more tools of the trade – and hopefully most will get the Adobe interface the two players have been fighting over for the last few years.

3. Problems with Lilo

Went to use my Linux server the other day and it just would boot. After going through the usual tests, and the fact that it displayed “Li” on the screen I figured that it was a problem with Lilo. Luckly I had the rather cool System Rescue CD to hand which gives a full CD bootable Linux but unlike Knoppix it is aimed at sorting out problems.

After mounting my problem disk (the root partition, checked by using fdisk /dev/hda) I could then start repairing Lilo. Lilo is built around being updated it seems because this was trivial:
chroot /mnt/tempmountpoint /sbin/lilo
And that was about it, but the System Rescue CD gives lots of other tools for look at partition and running rePartitioning tools – all very useful.

5. So where do I live

About here: http://worldmap.humhum.be/user/timc3

Self congratulations goes to the fact that “Tim Child” brings me up at the top and not the creator of eighties kid program Knightmare. Now subconsciously did I just put in this entry to get higher up the rankings or not? I shall never know.

Received my first DVD in the post from Tesco DVD rentals, if you look around hard enough then you can find 30 day free trials. And of course all the competitors are doing free trials, so maybe I won’t have to pay for rental this year! ;-)

– New Entry –

Well its not bringing me to the top anymore – probably because of the amount of downtime that this site had when switching to a new provider. Oh well hopefully it will be sorted shortly.

6. Google Gulp

Looks like Google are doing the same with their New Drink as they did with gmail – letting everyone else do the hardwork in getting one ;-)

Already there are caps for sale on ebay.co.uk and I expect to see plenty more and plenty more stupid bids.

Happy 1st April.
