-image-shhh…

Well yesterday was my Birthday and amoung other things we went to see shhh… at the V&A yesterday, and it was really quite good. Its an exploritive of music composed by various musicians with varying degrees of success. Of the highlights was Roots Manuva and a long time favourite of mine, Cornelius. Just walking around looking at the exhibits with music gave quite a different feel to the whole museum and I really recommend that even if you didn’t get to see this, take an iPod around and try and make your own soundtrack – the results are outstanding and sometimes felt like I was involved within a movie

-image-Samba onto Windows Network

This is a really easy way of mounting a windows share on a Debian box. It takes like 5 minutes to install and perhaps less to setup.

First as root:

Apt-get install samba
Apt-get install smbfs

Then try the following to get the server mounted:

mount t smbfs o username=YOURWINDOWSUSER,password=YOURWINDOWSPASSWORD //SERVER/FILESHARE/YOURMOUNTPOINT

-image-Debian Apt source

It appears that the apt source (the main uk Debian mirror – ftp.uk.debian.org ) that I was using didn’t produce the full list when I was trying to install the software. Instead I used one of the others that you can get from this page (apt source list is basically the same as the mirror list) – http://www.uk.debian.org/mirror/list . I am just trying the http://debian.hands.com/ one at the moment, after manually editing the /etc/apt/sources.list file.

-image-Installing Debian unstable

Just been trying out the install to the latest unstable version of Debian (that is due to go to stable this september) and I must say that I am impressed. The old installer was alittle hard to use, even for those with Linux experience, but now it helps you along most of the way.

I choose the net installer so I didn’t have to download Gb’s of Iso’s and let it get on its merry way, the only thing that was slightly confusing was the package chooser after I had choose to install custom packages (there are default options for web, file, print etc. servers). Exiting out of the package chooser mean’t that I had a very basic system, but in 15 minutes I had X installed and then after I installed gnome from the standard APT installation

apt-get install gnome

And this version of gnome was very impressive. Samba, smbclient and smbfs installed just as easily and then I could see out windows network with little effort.

-image-Branding sites

Just a couple of branding sites that have been posted on the renascentfused board that I thought would be very useful for future reference.

http://www.ge.com/brand/design_library

http://www.cidoc.net/

http://users.ncrvnet.nl/mstol/57.htm

I am particularly impressed with a corporate like General Electric putting their brand tools on a very public part of their site.
